Instructions for authors of articles
Arkhimedes is a magazine, not a scientific journal. The magazine contains news, popular science articles and opinion pieces, and it is read by members of publishing societies, as well as by people with an interest in the natural sciences and mathematics.
Focus on the relevant issues – it is not necessary to cover every individual detail in the article. Remember that the reader may not be an expert in your field of research. Try to use layman’s language – avoid complicated professional terminology. If possible, add illustrative images to your text. The list of sources or literature should be short. List only the most important sources.
Write a brief presentation of yourself. This will be published alongside the article. Articles will be edited. Authors will receive their edited texts for review before they are published. Authors will not be paid a fee.

Material
Manuscripts should be delivered by email to the editorial assistant at toimitus@arkhimedes.fi or to a member of the editorial board. The editorial board will decide which articles to publish.
Texts should be sent in .DOC, .RTF or .PDF format as email attachments. LaTeX is not used for Arkhimedes’ typesetting. However, authors may use it if it is not possible to write the article in any other file format. The final layout will be a modification of the original visual appearance of the article. Material sent to the magazine will not be stored or returned unless this is specifically requested.

Images
Image files should be in a printable format for pagesetting. Word screen grabs are not suitable for use as print originals. Acceptable file formats are .PDF, .TIFF, .EPS, .JPG and .PNG. Name your image files logically, e.g., “surname_image1.jpg”, etc. Authors must hold the full copyright to the images, tables and other material that they use, or they must obtain the publication right to this material.
Tables and graphs can be exported from Excel spreadsheets in .PDF format and sent electronically. Images must have a resolution of 300 dpi at printed size. Set the image resolution to 300 dpi when the width of the image is 15 cm.
Images should be delivered electronically to Ella Hänninen, the editorial assistant, at toimitus@arkhimedes.fi.

Copyright
The magazine shall be entitled to publish articles in printed format and online. The author shall retain the copyright to the work, but the original publication right shall belong to Arkhimedes magazine.

Open access: parallel storage
The magazine’s publisher permits authors to store peer-reviewed versions of their manuscripts and make them freely available in an electronic publication archive (embargo 6 months). The peer-reviewed version must feature all of the corrections required by the reviewers, but it is not the final layout and edited manuscript version.

The editorial staff will not return material that has not been ordered.

The magazine has received a grant for scientific publishing activities through the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies, and the grant is awarded by the Ministry of Education and Culture from Veikkaus funds.
